Debarati’s "BactoBerries" project reimagines personal hygiene amid a global water crisis. It utilizes probiotics and prebiotics to enhance the skin’s natural cleaning abilities. Inspired by fruit, Bacto 'Pops' and 'Pods' are made from bio-based materials like seed mucilage and food waste, promoting health and sustainability without water or chemicals.

Reinventing Personal Hygiene for a Water-Sparse World

In the face of a looming water crisis, Debarati’s "BactoBerries" project champions a groundbreaking shift in personal hygiene through her MA in Biodesign studies. This initiative moves away from traditional, resource-intensive cleaning methods by harnessing the power of the skin's own ecosystem. By employing probiotics and prebiotics, "BactoBerries" enhances the skin's inherent self-cleaning capabilities, promoting health and sustainability. The product eschews water and chemicals, instead supporting beneficial bacteria which naturally maintain cleanliness.

The design of the product draws inspiration from nature, particularly in how fruits protect and deliver nutrients. The prototypes, Bacto 'Pops' and Bacto 'Pods', incorporate bio-based materials like husk, seed mucilage, and food waste, reflecting an ingenious blend of functionality and environmental mindfulness. These designs address the issue of water scarcity and redefine interaction with hygiene products, positioning "BactoBerries" as a pioneer in sustainable personal care.

This project highlights its innovative approach.

This project highlights its innovative approach.
