Tina Jiao's “Of One” collection redefines jade in jewellery by leveraging traditional jade carving techniques to bring forth a sense of motion and lightness rarely seen in such pieces. By employing methods like chain carving and the intricate "Devil's Work Ball," which involve delicately hollowing out jade to create free-moving elements within the confines of the stone itself, Jiao challenges the conventional perception of jade's rigidity and heaviness.
The collection also probes into the valuation of different jade types, contrasting the coveted Fei Cui jade's rarity with the lesser-known Xiu Yu jade, often relegated to mass-produced souvenirs. Despite Xiu Yu's significant role in the historical context of jade carving, many in the West dismiss it as part of the jade family. Jiao treats each jade type with equal respect, showcasing the inherent potential of each stone.
Through her work, Jiao captures the transformative release from the stone's natural constraints, illustrating both vulnerability and strength in the artistic process—a single error can compromise the entire piece, yet this risk actualizes the creative vision.
