Designer Nol Netprom and partner Mai Nopkamon A. from Bangkok explored sustainable ceramic practices during their master's studies at the University of the Arts London. They researched eco-friendly ceramics by repurposing waste, such as oyster shells from Borough Market, into tableware. Their work aims to reduce environmental impact and promote a circular economy.

Exploring the role of designer- craft maker in sustainability and environmental challenges conservation
During the master’s degree at the University of the Arts London in the United Kingdom, designer Nol Netprom with his partner Mai Nopkamon A. from Goldsmiths, University of London questioned their research about the sustainable ceramic in the practicality of sustainable procedures and practices in ceramic studio. Since they both have run their own pottery studio based in Bangkok, Thailand for many years. While countless pieces of tableware were made by their hands and brought to markets in many places around the world, they still have some unsolved problems.
Although their studio has produced ceramics crafted from natural resources, it is undeniable that these processes consume substantial resources, labour, and energy. We would like to experiment with materials, processes and perceptions that making a positive impact on both the environment and society to encourage these craft practises built to last. In addition to conduct research question further in a practical way of professional practices by creating their own development in making circular/sustainable ceramics to answer a question: How my professional practices in ceramic design can contribute to the collection of sustainment in life according to the societal and environmental impact to the planet Earth we are living in.
Starting from waste, but ending with treasure.
Borough Market, the one of the biggest market in London, has produced waste from thousands of oyster shells just in a single day. They had no way to eliminate but only going to landfill which caused more than 25 million tonnes of Greenhouse gases emission to the city. It equals to adding 1 of 4 total cars on the road.
As a potter playing role in a designer-maker who has made thousands pieces of tableware for restauranteur clients. It could be a better circular economy if we can take out food-waste from this industry and reproduce them back offered as a new design of ceramics.
A matter of sustainable ceramics made from food waste
More than 2000 of oyster shells and a huge number of eggshells were diverted from landfill and utilized to produce this collection. The size of the giantic egg portrayed a pile of discarded eggshells and oyster shells just in a single day from Borough Market, London.
Yes, it is made from shells but why does it need to be an egg shape?
