In his solo exhibition, artist Kazutaka Shioi presents "SHA-KO-SEKI," a collection of large stone formations that reflect light. This series, derived from the term that signifies 'a stone capturing light', is a unique photographic endeavour. Although these structures seem like ordinary stones varying in size, shape, and hue, each one is intricately designed with photographs adhered to their surfaces. These photographs encapsulate the ethereal luminescence of Munakata Taisha, a renowned shrine in Japan. The surfaces of these stones are tinted with inkjet-printed inks, making them susceptible to rapid alterations upon sustained exposure to direct sunlight.
The "SHA-KO-SEKI" series is designed to fade intentionally upon sunlight exposure, epitomizing Kazutaka Shioi's conceptual take on the natural rhythms of life and demise. This gradual fading embodies Eastern philosophies and Buddhist notions of reincarnation, suggesting a return to the roots. As the stones progressively whiten with time, the art piece reflects a deep interrelation between the tangible fading occurrence and a philosophical understanding centred on unity and the perpetual cycle of being.

Kazutaka Shioi develops his works based on the nature around him. What He emphasizes in his creative process is not objective facts such as the history of the land or the environment but my subjective perception and sensibility that He has felt by putting himself in that place. He uses his unique point of view as the source of expression and communication that transcends national borders and race. He believe that the exploration of such an aesthetic sense will contribute to forming a de-centred and diverse culture.
