Ethan Liu, through his focus on the traditional street market culture in Croydon, London, UK, and against the backdrop of London's diverse international cultural context, examines the current local traditional environment and global issues. In doing so, he proposes a design model for new development and preservation of tradition. While conserving local heritage and traditions, he contributes to the street market culture, encouraging local farmers and their produce to be self-sustaining.
This will serve as a place for trade and leisure for the local community and residents, and the market will be a semi-public space. It aims to encourage residents to purchase local products and goods, thus creating a new industrial structure. It's a strategy designed to reduce urban dependence on food demand, further encouraging the establishment of local small businesses. This is in response to Brexit at the end of 2020, aimed at reducing reliance on European agricultural products.
In the modern society where supermarkets dominate, traditional markets are not as prosperous as they used to be. However, they still hold a certain position due to the different shopping habits of customers (mainly influenced by age). These traditional markets are often called "traditional fairs" in Europe and America. The New Mall is not only a discussion about tradition and community. It also explores the new role of an architect as a "developer" and a "protector" amidst the constantly changing positions in contemporary society and the relationship with various stakeholders.

Ethan Liu graduated from the architecture department of Central Saint Martins in London in 2016 and currently works as an architect in London. His professional field and work primarily cover the research and application of materials, and he strives to integrate new and innovative materials into each design.
His research and design projects do not stop using new materials but instead apply these materials in non-traditional ways to architectural design. This includes using these materials to reshape the concept of nature conservation. He firmly believes that architecture is not only a human living space but can also be part of the ecosystem. This concept integrates human and non-human forms of interference into the architecture, serving as a principle for ecological preservation.
This philosophy is reflected in all his design works. He is dedicated to creating spaces that are not only comfortable and aesthetic but that can help us coexist better with the natural environment. He hopes his designs will remind people that we are all part of the ecosystem and must respect and maintain it.
Ethan Liu
