Yu Mei Huang, through her Cast series, explores fabric's transformation into a three-dimensional form. She experiments with elastic yarn and recycled bubble wrap to create unique, sculptural pieces during weaving. The series demonstrates the fabric's capacity to achieve a sculptural feel and translucent textures, challenging traditional fabric perceptions.

Yu Mei Huang has sought to challenge the constraints of fabric as merely a flat medium through her Cast series, exploring its transformation into a three-dimensional form. Since 2017, she has been fascinated by the versatility of clay as a material, particularly its capacity to manifest various shapes and forms through manipulation.
In Huang's previous work, the 'A Therapeutic Space' soft sculpture series, she utilised stuffing and structural support to give different three-dimensional contours to the fabric. She continuously pondered whether fabric could attain a three-dimensional form without relying on external support. Conventionally, the material is often presented in a flat format. Yet, she believes that a wide array of shapes and fabric textures can be achieved by manipulating yarn properties and structural variations in the weaving process.
In the Cast series, Huang conducted material and wire experiments. She capitalises on these materials' lightweight and sculptural qualities by using elastic yarn combined with recycled bubble wrap during weaving. Upon completion of weaving, the fabric surface contracts and forms shapes due to the properties of the wire, thereby producing translucent textures and a sculptural feel. This creates a visual effect rich in depth and texture and challenges the traditional perception of 'fabric,' transforming it from a flat medium into three-dimensional artistic pieces.
