Rattan is a versatile and sturdy material derived from palm species indigenous to Asia, Australia, and Africa. It is renowned for its resilience and has been a mainstay in furniture crafting for centuries. Often seen in woven baskets and rustic tables, its attributes lend a unique warmth and texture to various design aesthetics. However, rattan is rarely found in contemporary design due to the inclination towards cutting-edge materials and techniques. The Mua Lau Lounge Chair is breaking this norm, which ingeniously integrates rattan into a modern design.

Brian Chang pushes the boundaries of traditional craftsmanship and ventures into uncharted territories by inventing new and creative uses for established techniques - MUA-LAU Lounge Chair. This endeavour aims to integrate the art of skilled craftsmanship into our everyday lives and establish a profound connection between humans and the materials they use. Plus, it won the Silver A' Design Award for Furniture Design Silver A' Design Award Winner for Furniture Design Category among many contestants in 2023 this year.

The Mua Lau Lounge Chair, a blend of rattan and bent metal piping, boasts a unique and structurally sound silhouette. Replacing traditional foam and cotton stuffing with rattan 'bolsters', the chair offers an intriguing blend of strength and flexibility. Its name is inspired by a Taiwanese delicacy famous for its contrasting textures, echoing the chair's sturdy exterior and soft, yielding interior.

The open weave design of the Mua Lau chair not only enhances visual appeal but also serves a functional purpose, providing surprising comfort. This innovation won the Silver A’ Design Award in 2023, demonstrating its successful blend of traditional materials with contemporary aesthetics. This chair redefines rattan's role in modern design, encouraging further innovative applications in future furniture designs.

Mua Lau Lounge Chair,

Brian Chang & Xu Da Zzan

Brian Chang and Xu Da Zzan designed the new Mua Lau lounge chair, a perfect blend of modern and traditional elements. The silhouette has a contemporary look with its low shape and curvaceous themes, but it also uses conventional materials, including rattan.

Rattan is held together by bent metal piping to add a strong structure as the foundation. Notably, Mua Lau uses rattan for foam and cotton placement when it is usually used as a fabric material. The incorporated bolsters create a springy feel, with 12 bamboo stripes intricately woven into the small cylinders, providing compressive strength and bending when sat on.
